THE LOIS LANE WEDDING DRESS TOUR

Lois Lane made her debut alongside Superman in Action Comics #1 in 1938, introduced as a sharp, fearless reporter whose determination often put her at the center of danger and adventure. Over the decades, her personality evolved with the times: brash and competitive journalist, wannabe wife, independent feminist, and world-renowned reporter. Likewise, her relationship with Superman/Clark Kent shifted as social attitudes changed, moving from playful reporter rivalry and secret-identity misunderstandings to a deeper partnership and mutual respect. Despite these changes in tone and characterization, one constant remained throughout the years: Lois’s enduring desire to marry Superman.

In this tour, we will take a look at all the wedding dresses that Lois has been seen sporting over the 59 years that led to her eventual real marriage to Superman in 1996!

To keep things interesting, the entries on this tour won’t follow any particular order. We’ll also be including wedding dresses worn in live-action media along the way!  I mean, let's be honest, the male writers and artists of the 1950s certainly did not give much thought to dress designs, so many renditions from that era are going to be very similar.  By shaking up the order, we can avoid some monotony!  And, here we go.....

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #13 (November 1959)
Local gossip, Mrs. Hagerty, overhears Superman and Sam Lane (Lois's father in his first appearance) talking, and spreads word that Lois and Superman are getting married.  Not wanting to embarrass the Lane family, Superman plays along until he can find a way to call off the wedding, while also maintaining the Lanes' credibility.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #86 (October 1968)
An 80-page giant dedicated to some of Lois' many weddings! The dresses from the stories within will be presented down the road, citing the original source material. This cover is included because the central "modern" picture is a unique dress unto itself.

Superman: The Wedding Album #1 (1996)
This particular giant issue featured Lois trying on several wedding dresses, leading up to her eventual nuptials with Clark.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #32 (April 1962) Superman tosses a coin to see whether he will marry Lois Lane or Lana Lang. There's some Bizarro Superman involvement, and ultimately, by the end of the tale Lana is still single!

Lois & Clark, The New Adventures of Superman
Season One, Episode 21 (The House of Luthor)

This is one of three wedding dresses that Lois wore throughout the series' four seasons.  This episode also featured Phyllis Coates, television's first Lois Lane, playing Ellen Lane, Lois's mother.

John Shea as Lex Luthor and Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane

Action Comics #245 (October 1958)
Lois believes she is marrying Superman, but it is actually the criminal Zak-Kul (from the bottle city of Kandor) in disguise.

For this whirlwind wedding, Lois simply didn't have time to pick out a proper wedding dress, and instead got married in the green dress and pearls she happened to have put on that morning!

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane # 29 (Nov. 1961) In this tale, we are shown, yet again, that glasses and wigs are all that are needed to become completely unrecognizable to people you see every day! Lois masquerades as the blonde Lorelei Larue. Superman falls in love with her and asks her to marry him (this is with a little mystical push from Mr. Mxyzptlk).

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #105 (Oct. 1970) Lois marries Johnny Adonis, a murderer on death row. Johnny had previously saved her life. Though the cover depicts a full wedding dress, in the story, a white veil is all Lois invested in for this nuptial!

Superman: The Wedding Album (1996) Lois has a possible wedding dress picked out by (the likeness of) former DC President, and current Editor-in-Chief, Jenette Kahn!!

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #41 (May 1963) Lois makes a flippant comment about selling her soul to marry Superman. Superman overhears this and decides to teach her a lesson by impersonating Satan.

Action Comics #484 (June 1978) This issue features the two weddings of Earth-Two Lois Lane. The first is her Earth wedding, and the second is her Kryptonian ceremony.

Superman #192 (January 1967) This is an imaginary story where Superman loses his powers and memory. Supergirl and Batman deem it appropriate to leave him in the dark about who he was so that he can carry on as normal a life as possible. As Clark Kent, he marries Lois, and they have a super-powered son who is a brat.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #43 (Aug. 1953) This story didn't actually feature Lois wearing a wedding dress, but she was drawn wearing one by Lt. Paul Hunt, a man temporarily confined to an iron lung. He's apparently able to draw detailed colored pictures using a single pencil. And, we'll just completely overlook the fact that people in iron lungs were inside the machine up to their neck, not their torso.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #89 (Jan. 1969)

This issue includes an imaginary tale where Lois marries Bruce Wayne.

Superman: The Wedding Album (1996) Lois continues to try on various options for her wedding dress.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #14 (Jan. 1960) Lois engages in some public deception. She intentionally dates Eddie, a serviceman she has no interest in. In the end, it turns out that Eddie is seeking a career as an actor, so he, too, is using Lois.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #108 (Feb. 1971) Lois is haunted by the ghost of Jack the Ripper. During this time, she has a dream about marrying Superman.

Lois & Clark, The New Adventures of Superman
Season Three, Episode 15 (I Now Pronounce You... )

The second of three wedding dresses worn by Lois on this television series. It turned out that this Lois was a frog-eating clone!
Dean Cain as Clark Kent and Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane

Superman Family #181 (January 1977) Lois is lured into marrying Superman, who has been transformed into a gnome.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #28 (Oct 1961) According to Lois, Superman has muffed things up again!! Actually, it's a malfunctioning Lois Lane robot who marries Lex Luthor in this story.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #103 (August 1970) An interesting take on a wedding dress for Lois in this tale. Turns out this isn't the devil, but an alien named Rajah Satdev. Lois calls off the wedding at the last minute when she realizes that Superman does actually love her. Her horns, hooves, and tail are removed before she is returned to Earth!

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #34 (July 1962) This issue features an imaginary tale of Lois marrying Lex Luthor.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #82 (April 1968) Lois is visiting the future year 4068 (as lady reporters so often do). While there, she becomes convinced that Superman is going to die very soon back in her "present". Upon her return, she arranges to marry him, secretly, of course. Then she discovers that the death date of Superman was a historical mistake, so she and Superman decide to annul their marriage.

Smallville
Season Ten, Episode 21 (Finale)

Lois (Erica Durance) dons her wedding dress as she marries Clark Kent in 2011.
Erica Durance as Lois Lane

Superman #136 (April 1960) Lois is in such a hurry to marry that she has no time to pick out a wedding dress. She simply takes her vows wearing the dress/vest combo she put on that morning.
Lois marries X-Plam, a super-powered individual from the year 2360. She married him for superficial reasons, so she became very unhappy. X-Plam sacrifices his life so that Lois can get back to her "present". Lois is a widow for the umpteenth time.

Superman Family #200 (April 1980) In this milestone issue, we get a glimpse at an imaginary future for all the regular cast of the series. Because each chapter was drawn by different artists, we see Clark and Lois in two completely different wedding attire for the same event!

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #68 (September 1968) The cover features yet another original wedding dress for Lois.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #37 (November 1962) Lois and Clark agree to enter into a sham marriage to expose a sham "Sweethearts Club".

The Adventures of Superman
Season Four, Episode 8 (The Wedding of Superman)
In this episode, which originally aired in 1956, Lois dozes off and wakes when some flowers from Superman are delivered to her. Things quickly lead to a wedding that a gang of crooks try to stop so Lois can't testify against them. The entire episode turns out to be a dream.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #90 (February 1969) Lois takes a vacation and meets Dahr-Nel, a Kryptonian refugee from the future. Lois has a spat with Superman after he uses her as a decoy, and in haste, she agrees to marry Dahr-Nel. What she doesn't know is that he plans to put them both in suspended animation for 200 years before getting to the future. Lois backs out at the last minute.

Superman's Family #172 (September 1975) Well, I guess it's time for Lois to possibly marry Lex Luthor.... yet again... with Superman as his Best Man. After saving the world, Lex is pardoned for all his past crimes. Lois decides to marry him, but she realizes her mind is being controlled before the marriage is finalized.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #128 (Dec. 1972) Once again, Superman tries to "teach Lois a lesson" about how dangerous it would be should he wed her. So he marries a robot Lois while forcing the real Lois to watch from another dimension.

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #79 (November 1967) In this issue, we get a tale where Lois dreams that she is transported to another dimension and marries Titanman, the superhero of that dimension.

Lois & Clark, The New Adventures of Superman
Season Four, Episode 3 (Swear to God, This Time We're Not Kidding)

For real!  Lois and Clark finally marry in this episode, which aired in October of 1996.  The episode was written and scheduled to coincide with Lois marrying Clark (for real!) over in the pages of DC Comics.

Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane and Harve Presnell as Dr. Sam Lane

Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #18 (July 1960) This tale is a case of virtual reality long before the term would be coined! Two aliens from Roxnon each assume the roles of virtual-Lois Lane and virtual-Superman. In their shared VR, they have their characters wed.

Superman and Lois
Season Four, Episode 4 (A Perfectly Good Wedding)

This episode features the wedding of Kyle Cushing and Chrissy Beppo, but it features a flashback where Lois reflects on her own wedding.

Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane

Superman: The Wedding Album (Dec. 1996) The issue starts off with this splash page of Lois in an elaborate wedding dress. She's undercover, pretending to marry a Mr. Naga. This dress will soon be ripped to shreds!

Superman: The Wedding Album (Dec. 1996) Finally, after 58 years of being featured as a couple in various media, Lois Lane and Clark Kent finally, and officially, tie the knot. Her selection of a wedding dress is seen here!

So there you have it! From the 1930s to the 1980s, Lois was seen in over 40 wedding dresses! Even Elizabeth Taylor would have been impressed! I hope you enjoyed this tour. I think it's always fun to see how characters change over the years, and Lois is one with a rich history, so mining these comics and TV shows was a real treat for your tour guide! If you are aware of any other wedding dress experiences with Lois that I may have missed, please let me know, and I'll work them in! Until our next tour, stay safe and keep enjoying the wonderful world of comicbooks!
